Status: Part-time; salaried; non-exempt; limited flex benefits
Hours: 26 hours per week; requires some night and weekend hours
Salary: $9.00 per hour

Purpose and Scope:
Athens Regional Library System, Georgia Public Library of the Year 2017, is hiring a Library Assistant to serve as an information specialist and adult programmer for the Oconee County Library. This assistant will provide front-line services, information, and genealogy research assistance to library patrons. The library will hire an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible individual who proactively searches for opportunities to deliver quality library services that engage the community and exceed expectations. This position requires a positive customer service attitude, dependability, tact, knowledge of library policies and procedures, and the ability to work as part of a team. The ability to start, finish, or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital. This position reports to the Oconee County Branch Managing Librarian.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and job assignments, including schedule and night and weekend hours, may change in the future.

Provides outstanding direct customer service to library patrons, assisting with their library questions and activities, and information, readers advisory, materials circulation, and technology needs.
Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement.
Builds and maintains working relationships with local history, art, and business advocates in community; establishes working relationships with adult-serving organizations in the community.
Assists and instructs library patrons in Genealogy and Ivy Room of Oconee County Library activities, and information needs, including using the librarys catalog and databases; plans (using ARLS guidelines) and presents genealogy classes to public.
Works with the Oconee County Librarian and ARLS advising staff to plan, implement and present public programs and classes for adults and to create or schedule displays, exhibits, and bulletin boards; plans and leads Oconee Countys Adult Summer Reading Program.
Designs and implements publicity for all adult library programs, including in-house, media, and social media.
Monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
Assists and instructs library patrons in computer activities, including using the librarys catalog and databases, the Internet, and basic personal computing programs.
Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including opening and closing the library; basic facility maintenance; organizing and re-shelving materials; accepting fees and fines; routing holds, loans, and information; materials processing; recording statistics; performing basic office duties.
Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
May direct operations of the library in the absence of supervisors, being responsible for opening and closing the library.
May train and oversee library volunteers as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Skill in upholding the librarys core values; ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, and respectful and that supports the community and co-workers.
Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing efficient, positive, and professional customer service to patrons of all ages as well as to co-workers.
Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with various computer applications.
Aptitude for planning, promoting, and presenting interesting, effective, and successful library programming for adults.
Knowledge of American and local history and genealogical research preferred; ability to master use of electronic genealogy resources provided by the library.
Knowledge of PINES; ability to use the library's automated system and the ability to assist public and other library staff in its use.
Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS and branch policies, procedures, and activities.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons and staff.
Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities.
Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building and grounds procedures.
Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office and library resources support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally.
Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
Ability to walk, climb, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, and crawl in order to handle and manage storage and retrieval of library materials and equipment. Physical ability to regularly operate a variety of 21st century library/office machinery and equipment; must be able move or carry objects or materials and to lift and place materials above head; must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.

Qualifications Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is required, with college degree or college experience preferred. At least one year experience working with the public is required, with library experience preferred. A combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered.
