Adult Literacy Specialist (Official Job Title: Customer Service Representative I): The employee in this role serves as the Libraries & Historical Resources liaison for Adult Literacy opportunities, outreach and support to the community. Responsibilities: plan, develop, conduct and evaluate outreach and communicate learning opportunities to adult individuals and families in need of literacy services; initiate and maintain partnerships; collaborate with representatives of local, regional and state literacy agencies and educational institutions; coordinate efforts with the Born to Read staff to support early/family literacy initiatives.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening

This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.

Duties:

Community Outreach
Serves as the Libraries liaison to local/regional adult and family literacy agencies and programs. Collaborates with representatives of Literacy Volunteers of South Sarasota County, Sarasota Literacy Council, Libraries Born to Read and Imagination Library, Florida Literacy Coalition, Unidos and similar agencies.
Initiates new and maintains existing community partnerships to promote literacy.
Develops and presents outreach programs for diverse adult audiences.
Plans and participates in special events with project partners and other relevant community events.
Assists Information Services, Adult Services, Youth Services and all Staffs, to conduct literacy activities.
Creates and distributes library system programs and promotional materials.
Remains knowledgeable about social service agencies, service delivery opportunities and challenges to target populations within the different communities.
Continually seeks new opportunities to improve outreach effectiveness.

Customer Service
Represents Sarasota County to library users, volunteers, staff and donors.
Implements standards of service that ensure the prompt and efficient resolution of inquires and requests from internal and external customers, delivered with the utmost courtesy and respect.
Demonstrates the impact and value of literacy programs and communicates this through public speaking engagements, presentations and by meeting with community leaders.
Provides literacy education and resource information to diverse adult audiences, including adult new readers.
Corresponds with partners; sends program publications and updates on literacy-related services.
Recommends collection resources to support adult literacy activities.

Administration
Works closely with the Adult Services, Youth Services and Early Literacy Coordinators to develop, execute and evaluate the library systems literacy plan.
Analyzes and prioritizes community needs and develops book allocations according to the outreach plan.
Prepares budget requests for resources to support the Adult Literacy activities.
Maintains database of community partners as well as prepares annual partnership agreements.
Prepares monthly reports for the Libraries & Historical Resources Director and other reports as needed.
Contributes to the development and implementation of library system goals, policies and processes.

Staff Development
Continuously keeps abreast of developments, new trends, research and innovations in libraries, early literacy, and factors affecting at-risk parenting populations, and shares this information with library staff.
Seek opportunities for continuing relevant professional development of self and others.
Trains library staff on Adult Literacy programs and literacy outreach efforts.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: A High School Diploma or equivalent education, one year experience in administrative or public contact customer service work and working knowledge of computer and hardware systems working with public response. A valid Driver's License is required.

Preferred Qualifications: An Associate's Degree in Library and Information Science, Communications, Education, or related social services field and two (2) years experience. Related experience in adult education, community events and activities planning and implementation fluency in Spanish or second language. A background in adult literacy and collaboration with social service agencies preferred.



Job Competencies:

Communication. Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly, accurately, respectfully; listens to others and invites feedback; knowledge of effective verbal/written techniques to educate and inform; uses diverse communication methods.

Technical. Knowledge of educational and instructional practices and techniques, needs assessment, computer-based learning. Ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate an adult literacy assistance program. Demonstrates skills in project management. Ability to operate personal computer, using word processing, spreadsheets, databases and similar software.

Teamwork: Ability to create and maintain positive relationships with co-workers, volunteers, patrons and community partners; collaborates with and supports co-workers; facilitates cross-training and shares learning; supports a climate of shared problem-solving and contributes to the accomplishment of goals.
