Director, Technical Services

Under general supervision of the Executive Director, is responsible for the duties and responsibilities
associated with the acquisition and cataloging of the Live Oak Public Libraries collections. Responsible for managing and supervising staff that perform support functions such as: acquisitions, cataloging, damage
repair, etc. Position reports to the Library Executive Director.


Oversees the cataloging of all materials, include e-resources.

Acquisition of books and materials, includes e-resources.

Coordinates collection development and all activities associated with maintaining the collection.

Maintains the integrity of the PINES circulation database and library systems collection.

Strategic and tactical planning.

Coordinates on policies, plans, and standards aimed at maximizing effectiveness and minimizing costs
related to the acquisition of materials.

Develops and monitors the annual operating budget for Technical Services.

Coordinates and manages reporting needs and data analysis for the library in relation to TS and e-

Communicates Technical Services plans and policies throughout the organization including management
groups and professional staff.

Performs original cataloging.

Assists in the development of staff user training and documentation.

Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates TS staff and ensures work is performed when they are not
available (coverage).

Performs other duties as assigned.

Master in Library Sciences required.

No less than 5 years of increasing responsibility and experience in a Technical Services environment.

Previous supervisory experience desired.

Significant experience in a public library setting is preferred, specifically in Technical Services planning to support organizational goals.

Original and copy cataloging experience.

Experience with OCLC Connexion.

Previous experience with PINES is preferred.

Excellent planning and communication skills.

Above average skills in Microsoft Office and spreadsheet management.

Excellent customer service skills, must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff at all levels, external community, and board members.


Extensive knowledge of MARC 21, RDA, Dewey Decimal Classification, and Library of Congress subject

General knowledge of business processes and their interrelationships gained through five or more years
of related experience.

Knowledge of and ability to use and direct the use of automated library information systems.

Ability to analyze and resolve complex issues and problems. Ability to analyze data and perform
research. Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions. Self-motivator,
independent, cooperative, flexible, creative. Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new
skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

Effective verbal and written communications skills and effective presentation skills, all geared toward
coordination and education. Ability to develop and conduct training activities for a variety of audiences.

Ability to organize, direct, and conduct the collection and maintenance of a variety of records and data.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

Ability to negotiate and defuse conflict. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees, community leaders, and the general public.

Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the
pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.

Ability to supervise and evaluate staff and volunteers.

Ability to adapt to changing needs, recognize and set priorities, and plan, organize and direct the work of

Physical Demands: Job involves considerable amount of movement and activity. Work routinely
involves lifting or handling material weighing up to 25 lbs, pushing book carts weighing p to 100 lbs, and
heavy use of the computer.

Mental Demands: This is high-level professional and technical work requiring sophisticated reasoning
and independent judgement. Work is performed with minimal supervision and allows for significant
discretion and variance in work routine.

Emotional Demands: Some stress related to public and board contact. Some pressure related to
sustained periods of high-volume activity and multiple demands.

Social Environment: Always people to talk to, work with, and supervise.

Physical Environment: Typical office/library environment. Some fluctuations in building temperature
related to HVAC problems can cause uncomfortable period of heat or cold. Some periods of elevated
noise levels.
