Early Literacy Outreach Coordinator ( Official Title: Community Outreach Specialist ): ****NOTE: Position is PART-TIME (20 hours/week; There is no medical and/or dental benefits coverage). The employee serves as the community liaison for the Born to Read program, Every Child Ready to Read campaign and other early literacy efforts by assuming a high level of responsibility for the functions below, with minimal supervision. Coordinator initiates new and maintains existing library/community partnerships as well as develops, plans, and conducts educational outreach programs for parents and children. In the team environment, the employee will participate in setting unit, library, and system goals; contribute to decision making and evaluation of progress.


Community Outreach

Serves as the community liaison for the Born to Read program and the library systems early literacy efforts.

Initiates new or potential community partnerships to promote early literacy.

Maintains existing community partnerships by maintaining regular contact with community partners.

Develops and presents outreach programs, parent education, story times and special events.

Plans and participates in special events with project partners and other relevant community events.

Assists library staff, especially the Youth Services Staff, with planning and conducting outreach programs.

Creates and distributes library system programs and promotional materials.

Remains knowledgeable about social service agencies, service delivery opportunities and challenges to target populations within the different communities.

Continually seeks new opportunities to improve outreach effectiveness.

Customer Service

Represents Sarasota County to library users, volunteers, staff and donors.

Implements standards of service that ensure the prompt and efficient resolution of each inquiry from internal and external customers, delivered with the utmost courtesy and respect.

Demonstrates the impact and value of early literacy programs and communicates this through public speaking engagements, presentations and by meeting with community leaders.

Provides early literacy education and resource information to families, community partners, and library staff.

Prepares correspondence as needed with enrolled families, staff and funders.

Corresponds with partners regularly including sending copies of the Born To Read newsletter and updating on library programs and services.


Works closely with the Early Literacy Project Coordinator and Youth Services Coordinator to develop, execute and evaluate the library systems early literacy outreach plan.

Analyzes and prioritizes community needs and develops book allocations according to the outreach plan.

Records and tracks Born To Read book and reading incentive distribution and inventory.

Maintains database of community partners as well as prepares annual partnership agreements.

Prepares monthly reports for Youth Services Coordinator and other reports as needed.

Contributes to the development and implementation of library system goals, policies and processes.

Staff Development

Continuously keeps abreast of developments, new trends, research and innovations in libraries, early literacy and factors affecting at-risk parenting populations, and shares this information with library staff.

Seek opportunities for continuing relevant professional development of self and others.

Trains library staff on Born to Read program, Every Child Ready to Read Campaign and other early literacy outreach efforts.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: An Associate's Degree in Library Science, Communications, Early Child Development, Education, Planning or related field and two (2) years experience. A Bachelor's Degree preferred from an accredited college or university in Library Science, Communications, Education, Planning or related field. Related community events/activities planning may substitute for the required education.

Preferred Qualifications: A background in early childhood development and familiarity with both local community social service agencies and literacy issues preferred. Fluency in Spanish or a second language beneficial.

Job Based Competencies: Demonstrates ability to interact with library staff and representatives of outside agencies; to initiate new and maintain existing community partnerships; and to develop, plan and conduct educational outreach programs to adults and children. Position requires a self-directed individual who can work with minimal supervision and who possesses strong oral presentation, planning, organizational, and writing skills, as well as computer experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher. Ability to travel frequently within Sarasota County is required.
