How do you get the word out that you have a program at the library and that you would like for those children and tweens to participate? This presentation will focus on ways to reach these children and tweens by using a well established resource that is not utilized as much as could be, what is this untapped resource? It’s the bookmobile!! This presentation will also focus on how bookmobile can help you with summer reading , the role bookmobile can play in providing services for pre-k children as well as teachers, what books you can use on the bookmobile to keep your patrons returning and what you can do if you don’t have a bookmobile.

Souns of Literacy
Librarians see many children enter kindergarten unprepared to succeed in reading, and we understand that it’s more important than ever that we find ways to use libraries and collections to unlock our children’s great potential. Join this session to share the experiences of several children’s librarians in the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library system as they use the Souns program with caregivers in their communities. Souns places specifically designed and sequenced letters of the phonetic alphabet into the hands of infants and toddlers. With this approach that uses play and multi-sensory tools and that uses the young child’s readiness to learn, librarians help children naturally move into the early stages of reading and build literacy skills for the entire family.
Presented by Emma Laster, Angela Whelchel, Mary Starck, Atlanta-Fulton Public Library and Brenda Erickson, Counterpane, and Jennifer Starck, Counterpane, Milani Room
