Featured Speaker
From www.ddavisstoryteller.com: “Donald Davis was born in a Southern Appalachian mountain world rich in stories. "I didn't learn stories, I just absorbed them," he says as he recounts tales and more tales learned from a family of traditional storytellers who have lived on the same Western North Carolina land since 1781. Davis grew up hearing gentle fairy tales, simple and silly Jack tales, scary mountain lore, ancient Welsh and Scottish folktales, and-most importantly-nourishing true-to-life stories of his own neighbors and kin. For Donald Davis, storytelling is a way of giving and living life. He invites each listener to come along, to pull deep inside for one's own stories, to personally share and co-create the common experiences that celebrate the creative spirit. For Donald Davis storytelling ‘,...is not what I do for a living...it is how I do all that I do while I am living.’”

A unique story about how community action can preserve history will also be shared as well as steps to take to becoming a storyteller. Perhaps even you can enter the "Master Liar's Contest!" This session will also feature “Using what you've got to tell a great story”;

Imagine Your Future: Partnering with Middle Schools
In 2006 Partners for a Prosperous Athens determined to break the cycle of poverty in Athens by increasing public participation in the economy. One of the ways to do this was to encourage teens to stay in school. In 2006 our library and eight other local businesses were invited by the school district and the Chamber of Commerce to become Adopt-A-School partners in the middle schools. As a result of our involvement with the middle school, we developed a special collection of materials for teens to give them help in finding out what their gifts are and what possibilities they might choose after high school. But most of all, it's FUN and EDUCATIONAL for library staff to meet with students once a month to talk about their choices for the future. Presented by Mary Jean Hartel, Athens Regional Library

Lost Ages
Creative ideas to reach and keep the older elementary age children attending programs! Averaging 50 children each week with "Cosmic Kids"(children in rising 2nd - 4th) and teens and 'tweens (begins at 5th grade) Smyrna Public Library sought community and parental support plus created activities to extend beyond the hour event. Further, we prohibited younger siblings from attending, we rewarded participants and limited parent attendance to only those assisting with the program. Many of the ideas we borrowed from other libraries and we are happy to share with you so that you may do the same! Presented by Lisa Tarr, Smyrna Public Library.
