Youth Services Librarian - North Sarasota Library

The Sarasota County Library system is seeking an energetic, team-oriented individual with a strong commitment to serving a diverse population to join the team as the Youth Services Librarian of the North Sarasota Public Library, 2801 Newtown Blvd., Sarasota, FL.

The North Sarasota Library has been a vital hub in the community since the doors first opened in 2004 and is recognized as a resource for positive change in the neighborhood and the community. With outreach to the residents of North Sarasota as a priority, the library is an active player in the arts and cultural life of the area. Staff plan and present numerous educational and enrichment programs supporting learning with a variety of opportunities for all ages. The library's service responses include lifelong learning, community and school partnerships, serving as a community commons, providing information resources, access to the Internet and computer instruction. The library also houses an African American Cultural Resource Center (AACRC). The AACRC collects and maintains materials in support of local and national African American history and experience.

The 25,000 SF North Sarasota Library is located near the Emma Booker Elementary School and the Newtown Recreation Center; it is less than a half mile from Booker Middle School, and its service area includes Booker Performing Arts High School, Ringling School of Art, Ringling Museum, New College Campus and the University of South Florida. The interior features meeting and conference rooms that are used daily by community groups. Other features include tutoring rooms, a computer lab, a Teen Zone, Kids Zone, Reading Garden, and a bookstore operated by the Friends of the Library. The art exhibits installed as part of the Art in Public Places program are displayed both inside and outside the building. The library building also received Gold Certification for green construction.

With the support of staff, volunteers, Friends and community partners the North Sarasota Public Library continues to thrive and expand.



Youth Services Librarian (Official Job Title: Library Professional): Develop and implement library services to children and young adults by collaborating with library co-workers, educators and community agency representatives. To create an environment where children and young adults are engaged, utilize the resources and services of the library, where they feel comfortable and will be inspired to explore their scholastic and creative potential.

Duties:

Customer Service for all Library users, specifically for Teens
Develops and implements standards of service that ensure a prompt and efficient response to each inquiry by internal and external customers, delivered with the utmost respect and courtesy.
Designs and implements library services to meet the needs and interests of children and young adults.
Facilitates requests from children and young adults for information and provides accurate and appropriate answers.
Connects children and young adults and their families with resources that encourage reading.
Provides informational services for the community, including access to library resources and services.
Presents individual and group training for public and staff in use of library, technology, equipment, and resources.
General reference service in assisting customers in locating answers to question and referral to agencies outside the library.
Keeps abreast of developments, new trends, and innovations in libraries.
As part of the library team, provides regular assistance at Youth service desk and to other sections as needed.
Provides a leadership role to children and young adults.
Represents Sarasota County to library users.
Plans and directs volunteer activities (Teen Advisory Board).

Communication/Programming/Outreach
Designs , implements and sponsors library programs that offer information, special skills or entertainment based on the interests and developmental needs of children and young adults.
Defines and implements outreach services to increase young adults use of library services and reach underserved populations.
Prepares reviews, compiles brochures, calendars, flyers, bibliographies and booklists.
Prepares press releases and other promotional materials.
Creates displays and offers outreach services; plans and directs programs for children and young adults.
Represents the library at local, community, county, regional, and system-wide meetings.
Analyzes community areas to determine current and projected needs and interests.
Gives outreach and in library talks on library resources and services.
Cultivates a good relationship with parents and children and young adult.
Fosters partnerships with youth services agencies.

Staff Development
Establishes and pursues strategies to stay informed about current and relevant information resources to enhance youth services in the community.
Participates in the development of goals, objectives, business plan and annual evaluations. Instructs new department employees, coordinates assignments, and appraises performance.
Collaborates with the library team to recruit, train, and manage work of volunteers.
Encourages staff and volunteers to use individual talents to creatively address tasks.
Participates in cross training in other sections and aids in cross training in their section.
Participates in assigned Emergency/Hurricane/COOP role as required by Sarasota County.
Provides opportunities for continuing professional development of self and others, especially in acquiring relevant understanding and skills.

Collection Development/Maintenance
Builds a collection to meet the needs and interests of children and young adults.
Reviews and recommends materials for the collections.
Participates in collection maintenance, including shelving, and weeding.

Administration
Articulates and communicates to stakeholders the needs of children and young adults to receive quality library service.
Operates within an assigned budget.
Operates and maintains library technology and equipment.
Supervises volunteers. Encourages volunteers to use individual talents to address tasks creatively.
Interprets policies and procedures for the public.
Assists with identification of alternative funding sources and preparation of required documentation.
Participates in developing goals and objectives in assigned section and agency.
Compiles, maintains and evaluates statistics.
Attends cash management training and participates in all aspects of the libraries cash management procedures.
Acts as person in charge in absence of library manager and assistant manager.

Other duties may include managing meeting room reservations, creating schedules, ordering supplies or equipment.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: A Masters Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association OR a Bachelor's Degree AND enrolled in a MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain a MLS/MLIS within six (6) months from date of hire. Some supervisory experience may be required.

Preferred Qualifications: One year of experience in a library environment.
