Librarian 1 Generalist Technical Services

Statement of Duties
The Librarian-1 Generalist Technical Services reports to the Deputy Library Director and assists the Technology Librarian by performing maintenance on library computer systems, and providing one on one and group technology instruction for library patrons and staff at Central and branch libraries, and other duties.

Essential Functions:

Performs regular maintenance on library staff and patron computers throughout library system.
Performs basic troubleshooting and support for library technology (e.g. printers, copiers, scanners, etc.) throughout the library system.
Fills in at public service desks at Central and branch libraries including Circulation, Childrens Room, Youth Services, and Information Desk as needed; and assists patrons in using both print and electronic library resources in person, by email, telephone, etc.
Offers one-on-one and group technology instruction to patrons and staff both on-site and off-site, including, but not limited to, local media centers, and community organizations.
Assists Technical Services Librarian with processing and cataloging of library materials, including print and non-print materials, including books and audio-visual materials; local history, and non-traditional materials, including musical instruments and toys; ESOL materials; and materials in various world languages, by analyzing and modifying OCLC records to create brief bibliographic records for Minuteman catalog, with acute attention to detail.
Researches and recommends new and existing technologies to improve library technology and services.
Keeps current in trends and best practices in library technology by attending workshops, conferences, and online webinars, and reading the professional literature.
Works on special projects as assigned, and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
MLS from an ALA accredited Library School and at least 2 years of professional experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill

Knowledge of computer network and library information systems, computer hardware and software, and internet applications. Ability to work both under supervision and independently, and with others as part of a team. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Mastery of basic computer network, hardware, software, and library information systems troubleshooting skills.

Work Environment
The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Employee may be required to work occasional weekends, and beyond normal business hours in order to attend evening meetings or complete work assignments.

Physical and Mental Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the positions essential functions.

Physical Skills
Work will require extended physical effort over a significant portion of the work day. Work effort principally involves sitting and standing to perform work tasks. Daily lifting, handling and carrying objects such as office equipment, technical devices and computer paper (up to 30 lbs.) required. Duties include frequent travel between library locations and to outreach locations within City.

Motor Skills
The job requires motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone, personal computer, technical devices and/or most other office equipment, including word processing, filing and sorting of papers.

Visual Skills
Visual demands require constantly reading documents, in-print, and online, for general understanding and analytical purposes.
