Distinguishing Features of this Position:
The KSU Library System seeks a dynamic, collegial, flexible, experienced, and research-oriented librarian to further the promotion and outreach efforts related to scholarly communication. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in the extensive scholarly communications landscape including digital publishing and preservation, open access platforms, open educational resources, open data, copyright and related intellectual property issues. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary as the librarian will be expected to play an active role in campus-wide and system-wide committees. This position may spend time working at either the Sturgis Library on the Kennesaw Campus, or the Johnson Library on the Marietta Campus.
Under the supervision of the Director of Graduate of Library Services for the Kennesaw State University Library System, the incumbent serves as a member of the Graduate Library Unit and helps guide the library system to meet the challenges of todays complex higher education organizations with an emphasis placed upon providing excellence in research, scholarship, digital publishing, and related intellectual property issues.
Scholarly Communication Librarian Duties (75%)
1. Develop policies and programming for library-wide scholarly communications program. Assist in the implementation of the KSU Librarys Strategic Plan and the Graduate Library Strategic Plan.
2. Work in tandem with Managing Editor of the Digital Commons to promote campus-wide awareness of the DC and to increase its holdings and usage.
3. Lead development and implementation of educational programs for
Library staff on issues related to scholarly communication.
4. Work closely with Graduate Librarians and Undergraduate Subject Liaisons to promote faculty awareness of scholarly communication issues. Develop informational and training tools that can be used by these librarians.
5. Develop and implement a program to increase awareness among faculty, researchers, and students about scholarly communications issues.
6. Develop and maintain a broad network of partners among faculty, scholars, graduate students, librarians, administrators, and committees in campus and system wide offices to inform, support, and advance the librarys scholarly communications programs and goals
7. Stay informed of and keep library and faculty up to date on national and international trends, legislation, and pending changes in intellectual property rights, commercial and academic/research scholarly publishing, and information technologies that affect access and preservation of scholarly information; plan and organize campus programs and events in these areas.
8. Develop initiatives that encourage and enable faculty to manage their own copyright and improve the economies of and access to published research (e.g. establish mechanisms to assist faculty with publishing choices and agreements as authors; explore alternatives to facilitate faculty publication venues).
9. Act as a primary spokesperson at campus, system wide, state, national, and international levels for issues and policies related to scholarly communications, ensuring that the library actively participates in collaborative programs and services, is informed of global publishing trends and intellectual property rights, and contributes to the advancement of scholarly communication.
10. Serve as the lead librarian on copyright and intellectual property developments and issues. Work collaboratively with the universitys Legal Affairs department to provide timely and accurate information of authors rights management; refers authors and researchers to Legal Affairs.
11. Participate in collection development activities in a subject area to be determined.
12. Serve as library representative to the Affordable Learning Georgia open educational resources initiative.
13. Serve as the library coordinator and representative for the Data Wall(s).
14. Identify, collect, analyze and communicate various statistics associated with position and responsibilities on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
Additional Responsibilities (25%)
1. Serve on library, campus, University System of Georgia and regional and national professional committees.
2. Be professionally active and contribute to developments in the field of library science, library technologies, and/or subject-specific discipline through scholarship, presentations, publications, and service.
3. Provide in class and one to one consultations with graduate students as necessary, supplementing the services provided by the Graduate Librarians.
4. Provide research assistance and reference services to students, faculty and other members of the KSU community as assigned in multiple formats.
5. Willingly work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends and at various KSU learning sites as needed.
6. Perform other duties as assigned.
1. Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or international equivalent
Five years of fulltime professional experience in a library or publishing environment with at least three of those years spent in an increasingly responsible role related to scholarly communications.
2. Impeccable written, oral, and presentation skills.
3. Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
4. Ability to work collaboratively with multiple constituencies: undergraduate and graduate students, university staff, librarians, faculty members, and senior level university administrators.
5. Thorough knowledge of current professional library principles, methods, procedures, and best practices especially as they related to scholarly communications.
6. Knowledge of copyright and issues related to fair use.
7. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team member in a rapidly changing, excellence-driven library. Ability to put the interests of the team first.
8. Experience in designing, developing, and implementing new services and programs for a broad user community.
9. Knowledge of academic publishing and the role of open access platforms in disseminating research.
10. Knowledge of FISMA requirements for grants and contracts
11. Ability to meet library faculty standards for job performance, scholarship, service, professional development, and promotion.
1. Project management experience.
2. Active professional development with a record of scholarly contributions and achievements and service to professional organizations.
3. Experience in the creation of online tutorials and research guides and in the use of social media platforms.
4. Experience with learning management systems such as D2L or BlackBoard
5. Experience in working with international and multicultural student groups.
6. Second Masters degree in a subject related discipline.
7. Experience with academic collection development and assessment principles.
8. Knowledge of research methodologies, quantitative research methods, and qualitative research methods.
9. Knowledge of citation management programs such as RefWorks, Endnote, Zotero, etc.
10. Knowledge of statistical tools such as SAS.
11. Experience with digital repositories.
