Assistant Archivist

The Office of Archives and Records collects, preserves, and makes available the permanent and official records of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, its people, institutions, and associations. It documents the historical richness, development, and the spiritual, temporal and business affairs of the Catholic Church in North Georgia. The Archdiocese of Atlanta seeks a creative and dynamic professional archivist to become part of its staff. The position reports to the Director of Archives & Records.

The Assistant Archivist is responsible for accessioning, arranging, describing, and cataloging archival collections of a variety of formats, including documents, audiovisual materials, digital records, and photographs. The Assistant Archivist will be responsible for creating finding aids, guides, and inventories for the archives. She/he will assist with conducting research and providing reference services for staff, parishioners, and/or the public in accordance with the policies of the department. Additional duties of the position include outreach, collection development, exhibit creation, occasional staff training and workshops, as well as supervision of volunteers and interns. The individual selected for the position will also assist the director with carrying out the policies and procedures of the Archdiocese of Atlanta records management program.

Qualifications Required Qualifications: The candidate should possess a Master of Library & Information Science degree with a concentration in Archival Management. Experience processing archival materials and records is required. Basic computer proficiency with a working knowledge of Microsoft applications, scanning software and equipment and image-editing software is also required. An understanding of database management, metadata, and authority control are necessary. Must be able to reach objects in high places and lift a box of 45 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications: Certified Archivist or with intent to work towards certification. Prefer someone with at least one year of processing experience and knowledge of emerging trends in archival processing and access that emphasize issues related to management and preservation of electronic records. Experience with collection management systems, such as Archon or Archivists' Toolkit, preferred.
