Gordon State College invites applications and nominations for a dynamic leader to assume the position of Director of the Library. The College anticipates renovation of the Hightower Library, and we desire an energetic, innovative leader to join us in using this opportunity to make the library the center of academic efforts on the Gordon campus.
The Director of the Library reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs. The current Hightower Library of Gordon State College is a 36,000 square foot building with seating for over 350 students. Within the library users have access to 108,102 volumes and 30,166 electronic books, and the library supports on-line access to over 250 databases. In addition, students and faculty have access to all the holdings of the libraries of the 31 institutions of the University System of Georgia through GIL Express. The Director of the Library supervises a staff comprised of 4 professional librarians, 2 staff members and several student workers.
The position will be filled ideally by January 1, 2014, depending on the availability of the most qualified candidate. We would consider delaying the arrival of that candidate until July 1, 2014 if dictated by the successful applicants current job responsibilities.
Provid e leadership and vision for the library as the center of academic life on the campus and as a resource to community and region
Align the strategic directions of the library with the strategic directions of the College and develop resources to accomplish these objectives
Administer budget, personnel, schedule, curriculum and general operation of the library
Support and engage with the Gordon faculty in teaching, professional development, service, and scholarship
Work collaboratively with the faculty to acquire collections and access to electronic resources that will support the growth of academic programs (particularly baccalaureate programs) and that will promote information literacy across the curriculum.
Oversee and participate in educational outreach to students and the Gordon State College community that includes library orientations, bibliographic instruction and consultation, and the delivery of courses in library science.
Develop and maintain productive collaborations with sister institutions in the University System of Georgia
The College: Gordon State College has served the community and region continuously since its founding in 1852 and has been a unit in the University System of Georgia since 1972. After more than three decades of serving the state as a residential two-year college, Gordon was named a state college in 2006 and asked to develop selected baccalaureate degree programs to address critical state needs. In May, 2012 the College graduated its third class of 50 baccalaureate early childhood education majors, its second class of 40 baccalaureate nursing majors, and its first class of 14 baccalaureate biology majors. In addition, Gordon State College offers baccalaureate majors in mathematics, history, English, health services and informatics administration as well as human services. Gordon supports two year transfer degrees in more than 40 different areas and has a strong Associate of Science of Nursing degree. Gordon State College serves approximately 4200 students with the good work of more than 120 full-time faculty.
The Community: The main campus of Gordon State College is in Barnesville, Georgia, a lovely town located an hour south of Atlanta, Georgia.
