Personal Knowledge Management: A Framework for Librarians
Searching is the “easy” part. But what do you do with all the material you’ve collected? What happens when you find an article that reminds you of something someone said in a meeting two weeks ago (or was it three)? What do you do to share your own thoughts, insights from articles and blogs, and what your manager said at the last staff meeting with the team charged with developing a strategic plan?
Tools for knowledge management are usually meant for institutions and are correspondingly expensive. But there are many tools for personal knowledge management that are very affordable. Elisabeth Shields is the Research Librarian for the Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2), the economic development arm of Georgia Tech. In this position, she works with her colleagues to help businesses and communities use technology to become more competitive, creating and keeping better jobs in Georgia. A former international development worker with a PhD in international relations as well as an MLS, Elisabeth is fascinated by the use of issue/dialog mapping for working through wicked (socially complex problems with no right answers). Her dissertation was based on qualitative data from interviews, and she has been searching for “idea processors” ever since.
