Description:

The core of this class is practical career politics: how to be influential within the institutions and communities your library serves. It builds on the Everyday Leadership class, but can be taken as a “stand-alone” class. Although the information is generalized to include improving relationships with library users, employees and co-workers, the emphasis is on workplace politics with bosses: how to use positive reinforcement to ethically get what you want. It is based on decades of working with library directors, managers and employees and relies heavily on the concept of personal influence.  The content would be useful to anyone who is dealing with institutional politics and wants positive strategies for advancing their career as well as garnering support for their library.

Topics include:

Topics include different models of influence, understanding and using rapport, information and action, the importance of manners and precision, and how to apply influence in different situations.

OTHER INFORMATION:

This program will be conducted online using three different kinds of software (Wimba, LinkedIn and LE@D/Univ. of North Texas), each which does a different job. If you have never used these kinds of tools before, they might be a little confusing or even intimidating at first. However, you will receive friendly support and the time to practice and improve your skills with Library 2.0 tools. Online classes save you travel time and costs and allow you to participate at your convenience. You should expect to spend about two-three hours each week on the class.
