You may have heard people talk about the latest advance in technology: “the cloud.” In this webinar, participants will learn what cloud computing is, how it’s changing our work, and how nonprofit organizations can take advantage of cloud-based services (e.g. Salesforce, Google Docs, Dropbox) to enhance their operations in all parts of their organizations to become more efficient with their limited resources and time.

Participants will see real-life case studies of nonprofit organizations that are using these tools every day. We will offer a survey of cloud-based tools that organizations can use within their own organizations in the areas of cross-organizational management, program management, human resources, marketing and fundraising.

At the end of the webinar, participants will leave with a list of tools and resources for further exploration, and with specific strategies about how to incorporate these tools into their day-to-day work.

Digital Preservation, Part 1: Inventory and Selection

Digital Preservation is the focus of a three-part webinar series that will help you preserve your digital content. Sponsored by the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Nebraska Library Commission, these webinars will connect you to Library of Congress training modules. The LC’s Digital Preservation Outreach Education (DPOE) program simplifies the complex world of digital preservation into six tasks modules: inventory, select, storage, protect, manage, and provide.

The February 6 webinar will focus on the Inventory and Select Modules: The first step in digital preservation is identifying what types of digital content needs to be preserved. Learn the importance of conducting and maintaining an inventory of your digital content and how that inventory will assist you in setting priorities and selecting what should be preserved.

Collaboration: What Works and Why

It could be argued that collaboration is the quintessential characteristic of the nonprofit sector. Many of our webinars over the past three years have addressed collaboration in one form or another: we’ve offered multiple perspectives on governance, employee relations, volunteering, planning and development as internal collaboration, as well as discussions of collaboration among nonprofits, and between nonprofits and the public and private sectors. In this webinar a panel of consultants will look at the mechanisms of and impediments to various forms of collaboration between organizations and the resources available to pursue collaboration more effectively. To make the webinar more responsive to the interests of the participants we will ask for questions and comments both before the webinar (we will contact registrants a few days before the webinar) and during it.

Takeaways:

How to evaluate different forms of inter-organization collaboration

What approaches and behaviors facilitate success in collaboration

How to decrease the risk of failure

Changing the DNA of Scholarly Publishing: The Impact of Born Digital Content on the Scholarly Community Today

After 500 years of print publishing, the advent of digitization has caused a huge evolutionary leap in scholarly publishing. Content once logically packaged in a book or print journal issue has now quickly evolved not just to an online version of print but into an entirely new digitally-born method of scholarly communication. In this webcast, publishers and librarians will discuss current emerging models for scholarly communication and discuss its future. Damon Zucca from Oxford University Press talks about the transformation of the long-standing print Oxford Handbooks series into a dynamic article delivery service, providing scholarly research reviews in advance of their print publication and offering born-digital content—blurring ebooks and serials into a new format. Vicki Parsons, Head of Collections at Georgia Gwinnett College Library, talks about her experiences developing a library collection for a born-digital institution in a twenty-first century world encompassing both print and online. Rolf Janke, from Sage Publications shares his experiences of transitioning print content into the digital space focusing on how the value of content must not get lost in translation moving into the various digital forms.

Self-Directed Achievement: if you give library staff an hour

This webinar shares how staff at the Tooele City Library implemented a "Self-Directed Achievement" model for staff development.

"Set one training goal each week achievable in one hour." This simple directive was given to every staff member of one Utah library in September 2011. The result just one year later? A sustainable, positive culture transformation. The mechanism, called “Self-Directed Achievement,” is a consistent, agile, individualized approach to staff development in a climate of constant change. It champions the basic library principle of lifelong learning. It is achievable for every individual with any level of expertise. And its impact will ripple through your organization from the staff work room to public lounge areas. Following this webinar, you will understand the model, mechanics, individual accountability, and supervisory responsibility involved in this remarkable method...and you’ll want to do it too.

What Executive Directors Desperately Need to Know About Fundraising

Our webinar will focus on addressing the essence of a non-profit leader’s job function – fundraising. This is ironic because the overwhelming majority of executive directors we’ve surveyed tell us it’s the part of the job they enjoy the least. We’ll focus on why EDs struggle with this most essential of tasks and what they can do to significantly direct sufficient time and effort to ensuring organizational sustainability.

Takeaways:

We’ll discuss the ‘convenient truth’ of blaming the economy and why that’s not going to help bring $ through the doors

Take part in a self-assessment survey that will “slot” your position on the ED/fundraising scale

Discover why individual donor fundraising is absolutely vital…even if and when all else fails

Learn about the serious implications inherent in ignoring fundraising to individuals

Engaging Audiences with Data Visualization

Edward Tufte, Stephen Few, and others espouse graphical purity and simplicity when visualizing data. Yet while "pure" visualizations may function successfully for experts, they are not necessarily useful for communicating meaning to lay audiences. Engaging non-expert audiences is essential to communicating the value of one's data and research. Fortunately, we can draw on principles and practices for engagement from the fields of graphic design, interaction design, and (data) journalism.

Join us for a hands-on webcast presented by Scott Murray author of Interactive Data Visualization for the Web, as he guides you through the framework of three avenues of engagement: aesthetic, narrative, and interactive.

How Libraries can meet the Evolving Needs of Patrons in the Digital Age

A webinar presenting research from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, providing insight on what types of services Americans value in their library and what types of services they would like to see their library start to offer.

Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, will be joined by digital and library experts to discuss the findings of the Project’s most recent report, Library Services in the Digital Age, which asked a representative sample of Americans what types of services they value in their library and what types of services they would like to see their library start to offer. These findings are critical to informing the conversation on how to advance change in libraries in order to keep them relevant and responsive to communities in our increasingly digital age.

Building a Research Commons in a University Library: Connecting Scholars with Technology, Expertise, and Each Other

Emory’s Robert W. Woodruff Library opened the Research Commons in the Fall of 2011. The 5,000 square foot space is dedicated to graduate students and faculty who are engaged in collaborative scholarly work which takes advantage of digital technology. This presentation will focus on the mission, the space, and the way the Research Commons takes advantage of its place in the library: the Research Commons provides neutral space where interdisciplinary groups of scholars can work collaboratively. Almost all of the furniture is mobile, enabling users to configure the work areas to suit their needs. This open design also allows scholars to see what others are working on and to be inspired by what they see. These unplanned and serendipitous encounters, along with more formal events, allow the Research Commons to establish and nurture an interdisciplinary community of scholars interested in digital scholarship. Housed within the Research Commons is the Mellon Funded Digital Scholarship Commons (DiSC). The mission of DiSC is to work with scholars whether they require instruction on simple tools or need help planning and executing a larger project.

Crisis Communications for Nonprofits

Sexual misconduct, embezzlements, sudden changes in leadership, defunding programs, loss of accreditation, compensation issues, misuse of philanthropic funds, labor disputes…

Members of the media have spent their entire careers getting ready to interview you.

Doesn’t it make sense to spend just a few minutes learning why the media doesn’t cover your story or issue the way you want? And when they do, why the story doesn’t look or read the way you think it should?

Especially in today’s world of “gotcha” journalism, with tiny, digital cameras capable of sending hi-definition pictures to YouTube and CNN within minutes and reputational challenges amplified exponentially by Facebook and Twitter, “managing the media” is a necessary skill set for educational leaders.

This fast-paced talk by veteran crisis communications and media specialist Bruce Hennes, from Hennes Paynter Communications in Cleveland, Ohio (www.crisiscommunications.com), will focus on a highly-strategic approach to communicating during a wide variety of situations, offering methods for establishing and maintaining “control of the message,” enabling you to move your message forward or mount a defense against a sudden press onslaught.

Takeaways:

Gain insight into what the media looks for in an interview

Understand how and why the media’s objectives differ from the interviewee’s

Understand how to better and more-effectively communicate to protect the organization’s image, brand and perception in the marketplace

Designing Interactive Library Spaces

What does it mean to Evolve? Why do Libraries need to Evolve? Through this webinar, Dave Hesse and Brian Pichman of the Evolve Project will discuss the importance of redesigning library spaces to make them more interactive and collaborative. The Evolve Project is a collaborative platform that aims to change the way people see libraries through the injection of technology that fosters collaboration and exploration. These technologies include laser tag, Sphero Balls, Sifteo Cubes, interactive Legos, and so much more! Learn techniques for how to innovate. In today's times, libraries must become the frontier for interaction and engagement while enhancing their environments to include new technology, open spaces, and unique programs to pull in patrons.

Georgia Library Day 2013

From Diana Very, GLA President:

"Time is money and we all know there's not enough, so we will not ask for time from our legislators this year. We have a tradition of providing the special prints of the original by artist Debbie Davis, matted and donated by Mumford Library Books to give to legislators to remind them of the importance of libraries in the lives of Georgia citizens. This year's print features historic Fort Pulaski in Savannah.

"In order to distribute the prints and not ask for time in their overloaded schedules to join us in a separate room, Georgia Library Day participants will be dividing into groups and delivering the prints personally to their offices with "Love Your Library" stickers to staff.

"This is a great time to come together as a large group to come face to face with our legislators and tell them of the resources provided by their votes. Volunteers are needed and all participation is encouraged. If you don't want to walk the halls of the Capitol, then please come and help coordinate the prints for delivery in Room #123. There's a place for everyone. Bring Board of Trustee members and friends groups to speak about your library."

For more information contact: Diana Very, GLA President, 404-235-7156 or dvery@georgialibraries.org.

Georgia Library Day is held each year during the legislative session. The Georgia Library Association, in cooperation with the Georgia Library Media Association and the Georgia Association for Instructional Technology, holds this event for librarians and other library advocates to visit legislators face to face to urge them to support Georgia libraries.

Are We Reconfigured Yet? US Research Libraries – Priorities, Trends, Directions

Exclusively for OCLC Research Library Partners, this webinar will provide a synthesis of the priorities and trends affecting US research libraries in the twenty-first century and the directions they are taking.

In this webinar, OCLC Research Library Partnership Vice President Jim Michalko will share a synthesis of the priorities and trends affecting US research libraries in the twenty-first century, the directions they are taking, and the ways in which OCLC Research seeks to respond to these concerns and advance the desired directions. This synthesis is based on a series of interviews that Jim conducted with the senior staff at more than 65 OCLC Research Library Partner institutions, as well as surveys by OCLC staff and visits to institutions by OCLC field staff. Jim observed a surprisingly strong convergence of concern around a small number of issues despite differences in library size, constituencies, funding and geography. This suggests that a new pattern of investment has begun that will result in a new portfolio of library services. The exact service offerings vary from institution to institution as they take shape through close attention to and engagement with the local institutional mission and the needs of the local constituency.

Digital Preservation for the Rest of Us: What's in it for Librarians and Library Users

Offered by San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science

Digital preservation is a "must-have" function for every library who purchases digital content. A digital preservation system extends the model of print journals and books on the shelf to digital media. It ensures that a library continues to have access to their digital assets even after a subscription is canceled or the publisher discontinues access. Setting up a digital preservation system is surprisingly easy. The key is ensuring that you buy perpetual access to your content, and that your content providers support the digital preservation system that you choose. This talk introduces you to digital preservation systems, discusses preservation strategies and pitfalls, and shows you how to give library users access to preserved content.

Philip Gust

Philip Gust is with the Stanford University Libraries LOCKSS Program (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe). His focus is integrating digital preservation into libraries, and making preserved content useful to librarians and library users. He developed the LOCKSS metadata management system, the OpenURL resolver, and integrations with link resolvers and citation managers. He was on the founding team of several start-ups, and led R&D teams at several major companies. Philip previously taught Computer Science at the University of Arizona. His primary interests are human-computer interaction, distributed systems, and collaborative computing. He is the 2013 President of the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Special Libraries Association, a Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a Senior Life Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Frankenbooks - Understanding the eBook Opportunity

Do ebooks change everything or are they just the same as print? Not by a long shot. What are the opportunities and what enhancements might we expect? Is this the final straw for libraries or the biggest opportunity since the web? Framing the ebook opportunity is one of the bigger challenges facing libraries of all types today. What is the future of the directory or reference book? Whither encyclopedia? What about textbooks? Is fiction different than non-fiction? What do we do about devices, apps, and more? What is the role for print? What will collections look like? This interactive webinar, led by Stephen Abram, will seek to build insight and understanding of the ebook opportunity.

Who should attend:
Anyone who is struggling with the concept of ebooks in the workplace and how to implement this changing format and want to keep their eyes out for additional innovation in this space. This includes library management, acquisitions, and those who perform all these functions at the same time as solos.

By the end of this program, participants will:
- Have a better understanding of the impact of ebooks on the workplace, as opposed to the high profile popular reading and fiction discussion that's engulfing the publishing and library world at this time

Social Change Anytime Everywhere: Best Practices to Build a Multichannel Campaign Plan

From your website to social media, email to mobile messages, online to offline, multichannel strategies require coordination and creative thinking across teams and departments, and a focus on the core of your work beyond any one specific call to action. In this session, we will show you how to craft an online multichannel campaign plan to meet your mission and campaign goals, and how other organizations are successfully integrating multichannel efforts into their work. For example, what happens when you tie your Facebook posts to your online fundraising appeals? What about sending text messages connected to your email actions the next day? Multichannel strategies bring your staff together and connect your community across platforms for more targeted actions. This session provides highlights from the new book Social Change Anytime Everywhere: How to Implement Online Multichannel Strategies to Spark Advocacy, Raise Money, and Engage your Community by Allyson Kapin and Amy Sample Ward and gives you the next steps you need to start working to create real social change online and on the ground.

Best practices to build an effective multichannel campaign plan

Tips to roll out your multichannel campaign plan

Big Talk From Small Libraries

The first Big Talk From Small Libraries was such a success, we're doing it again!

Big Talk From Small Libraries 2013 will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (CT) via the GoToWebinar online meeting service.

We’ve been listening! A comment we’ve heard pretty often is that so many presentations at conferences seem to be by and for librarians from larger libraries. Well, Big Talk From Small Libraries will change that. This free one-day online conference is aimed at librarians from small libraries; the smaller the better. Each of our speakers will be from a small library or directly works with small libraries.

Topics will range from technology (new tech and old tech) to programming to new roles for the library. Come for the programs on what you’re dealing with now, or maybe try something new.

Everyone is welcome to register and attend, regardless of how big or small their library is, but if your library serves a few thousand people, or a few hundred, this is the day for you.
