It's curiouser and curiouser Georgia Libraries!

I'll bet the average library staff member did not know that Lewis
Carroll defined the social networking needs of our users as early as
1865. Listen to the opening words of his now classic work that expresses
Alice's no-nonsense attitude about "just plain text".

"Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the
bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the
book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in
it, `and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice `without pictures or

Alice may have been unaware that today's web is a shared network space
that drives work, research, education, entertainment and social
activities. However, her savvy nature said (even at age nine and almost
150 years ago) that reading without interaction or collaboration was not
any fun and there really is no learning without it.

All of you are seeking to be central to the personal learning landscape
of your users and now happily the participatory and social nature of Web
2.0 will make that mission possible in both our virtual and physical
spaces. Why not join us in Athens on August 3rd for the 18th
GOLD/GALILEO Annual Users Group Conference where our theme will
celebrate the delight and power this partnership has enabled and our joy
in sharing it with each other.

The conference will include three sets of concurrent sessions plus a
GALILEO training showcase. Sessions will feature presentations
demonstrating how dynamic Georgia libraries are using creative
collaborations, emerging technologies and highly adaptive communication
styles, tools and trends to meet the multifaceted needs of information

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Register by July 23 (deadline
one week from today) to receive the early-bird discount rate of $30.00.
Attendees may pick up conference packets from the University of Georgia
